If you want a strategy to drive your team’s performance, clarify your vision first.
As a woman who leads, I know you’re often flooded with well-intentioned advice. Friends, colleagues, social media gurus, and even well-meaning family who all seem to have an idea of what you “should” do. Whether you’re scaling your business or managing a team, there is always someone offering you an expert opinion, best practice or “must-follow” strategy each promising THE path to success. The result? You feel pulled in opposing directions, overwhelmed by the options, choices and decisions available to you making it tough to define a strategy that motivates and drives productivity.
So how do you cut through the noise? How do you get through the endless stream of advice and pinpoint what will genuinely work for you? Clarify your vision: define your end result in specific detail so that you know instantly whose advice is relevant to you and what advice to follow.
If you don’t know where you’re going, how do you know whose advice to follow?
Without a clear vision, every piece of advice is likely to feel relevant and impossible at the same time. You’re likely to end up adopting strategies that were never made for you and may very well steer you away from your goals. Clarifying your vision will give you a compass, or more accurately the north star on your compass giving you a clear, consistent direction amidst the chaos. It will help you to filter out irrelevant suggestions and centre your focus on what is truly important to you and your team.

WHAT IS A VISION?
Quite simply, a vision is a clear and compelling picture of the future you’re striving to create. It isn’t necessarily a goal, but rather an overarching purpose that motivates actions and decisions. As a Coach, I would recognise your vision as a foundational element of a goal, one that shapes your behaviours by providing a roadmap – a roadmap that is unique to you. Simon Sinek calls it your “why.”
THE POWER OF CLARITY
I’ve already explained that a clear vision can act as a North Star on your compass, guiding the advice you take, the decisions you make and the strategy you craft. As a woman who leads, whether you’re an unintentional people leader put there by your growing business or an ambitious change maker put there on purpose, a compelling vision will streamline your growth strategies and provide you with a consistent, inspiring direction to align your choices. From my professional perspective, here’s how your vision might help you:
BEHAVIOURAL GUIDANCE: A clear and compelling vision can act as a psychological anchor, unconsciously influencing your daily choices and behaviours. It reduces decision fatigue by providing an internal reference point, making it easier to prioritise actions that align with your vision. From a neuroscience perspective, this anchor helps to reduce your cognitive load and will help you focus, even when you’re distracted or under pressure.
EMOTIONAL REGULATION: If your ideal outcome informs your unique roadmap it is likely to align with your values, the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. Aligning your vision with your values in this way will help you overcome any challenges or setbacks so that you can easily stay committed even if the plan changes repeatedly. This same alignment activates the reward pathways in your brain enabling a sense of purpose and by extension reducing any stress or anxiety.
BURNOUT PREVENTION: When you have a clear and compelling vision, it is easier to say “no” to distractions, side quests, unnecessary tasks and asks that may derail you. The vision will help you to set healthy boundaries when everyone has a suggestion, help you prioritise tasks and protect your energy and focus when you want to support everyone and these two things are crucial for preventing burnout.
HOW TO CREATE YOUR VISION
Shhh! Don’t tell the others – this is top secret coach stuff! Alright, not quite. Every good coaching conversation relies on a subtle framework that roughly comes back to four key pillars: your goal, your reality, your options and your will – otherwise known as the GROW model. Here’s how you might use this framework to clarify your vision:
GOAL: Define your Vision. The first step is to clearly define your goal, which, in this context, is your long-term vision. Here’s an example that might be helpful: imagine your vision is to create a more inclusive and innovative work setting. Perhaps your vision includes concrete goals like launching an initiative, creating a safe environment for team feedback or leaders demonstrating organisational values in action, how do these individual actions inform an overarching purpose that motivates actions and decisions?
- Be Specific: Your vision should paint a clear picture of your desired future. The more specific you are, the more compelling and motivating your vision will be.
- Align your Values: Connect your values with your aspirations to keep you motivated even when things get tough.
REALITY: Assess your Reality. Take an uncomfortably honest look at your reality, focus on facts without getting caught up in your own reactions to the discomfort. For instance, if your vision is to lead a high-performing team but your current reality includes low morale and frequent miscommunication. Acknowledge, validate and address the the specific issues that may be undermining your vision.
- Identify Gaps: Consider where you are now in relation to where you want to be – what are the key differences between your current situation and the future you imagine?
- Acknowledge Challenges: There will be opportunities and obstacles in your reality, honestly understanding them will ensure you craft a vision rooted in reality.
OPTIONS: Explore your Choices. There are many ways to… eat a kiwi fruit!? More to the point, there is always another way to get where you’re going; it’s important to evaluate which way best aligns with your vision and your resources. Let’s say your vision involves scaling your business, your options might include hiring, diversifying your services or improving your marketing efforts. Each option has merit but is it right for you?
- Brainstorm Options: Make an exhaustive list of actions thta might bridge the gap between your current reality and your vision – think broadly, creatively and challenge any perceived impossibility.
- Evaluate Alignment: Every option must pass two qualifying questions: Will it move me towards my goal? How does it align with my vision? This will help you eliminate unnecessary or distracting ideas.
WILL: Commit to Action. Your final step is to turn your strategy into small, manageable and actionable steps. Let’s say your vision is to build an engaged team, your actionable steps might include weekly check-ins, creating a feedback system or facilitating a team-building activity. Make each step measurable and make a point of recognising your progress.
- Your Priorities: Based on your evaluation of options, prioritise your action in order of what will have the greatest impact in moving you toward your vision.
- Plan: Develop timelines, milestones and deadlines – make them ambitious but realistic so that they’re motivating.
- Accountability: Commit to your vision by creating accountability partners or check-in points.
WHY IT MATTERS
It is easy to dismiss clarifying your vision as an extra or unnecessary step that will take up time and energy you don’t have. Here’s how it impacts you, your team and your clients:
YOU AS A WOMAN WHO LEADS: A clear and aligned vision is powerful for your development.
YOUR TEAM: A well articulated vision is a motivating tool for a team.
YOUR CLIENTS: Your vision will influence your clients (or stakeholders) and the value you deliver to them.
