NEUROSCIENCE AND ACT INFORMED COACHING FOR STRESS MANAGEMENT
If you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or struggling to find balance, you may find stress management coaching helpful. My personalised approach, grounded in neuroscience and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), will help you to understand, and more effectively manage, your experience of stress. Using targeted strategies and practical tools, I can help you regain balance, enhance wellbeing, and face life’s demands with renewed energy and confidence.
What is stress?
The pandemic pushed many of us beyond our ability to cope, higlighting how our hurried and busy lifestyles, constant information overload and increasingly blurred boundaries between living to work over working to live may not be doing us any good! In February 2024, 91% of UK adults reported high or extreme levels of pressure or stress in the past year, leading to 1in 5 workers (20%) in the UK taking time off work in that period.
As a coach I view stress as a natural motivator that helps to motivate, fuels performance and make effective decisions; AND the worry and mental tension that is associated with challenging situations that if improperly managed, can have a devastating psychological and physiological effect. Studies show how you view stress – a natural resource to be managed as opposed to threat to be avoided – can significantly change your experience of stress and your outcomes.
I don’t agree that we are chronically stressed, in fact, we are chronically under-educated on how to manage our experience of stress. By blending behavioural coaching, neuroscience, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) I can equip you with actionable, easy to implement strategies to better manage stress and enhance your wellbeing.
What is burnout?
We often think of burnout as a modern problem, but the term was actually coined by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s. He defined burnout as “a state of exhaustion, fatigue, and frustration due to a professional activity that fails to meet expectations.” Similarly, we don’t have a universally accepted definition of burnout, however, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), developed in 1981 and considered the “gold standard” for measuring burnout, assesses the experience on three dimensions:
- Emotional Exhaustion: Feeling drained and depleted of emotional and physical energy, enthusiasm and motivation.
- Depersonalisation (Cynicism): Developing a cynical attitude towards previously fulfilling activities like work and family, leading to isolation, detachment and general negativity.
- Reduced Personal Accomplishment (Professional Efficacy): Experiencing a decline in feelings of competence and successful achievement in one’s work – nothing feels good enough.
Your experience of burnout is unique, and there are no quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions. However, there are practical steps you can take to prevent and manage burnout.
Coaching addresses the root causes of burnout, which often stem from unrealistic expectations and improperly managed stress. Through personalised 1:1 coaching sessions and workshops, I can help you develop effective coping strategies, set realistic goals, and create a balanced approach to your professional and personal life. Blending behavioral coaching, neuroscience, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I provide actionable, easy-to-implement strategies to help you manage stress and prevent burnout, enhancing your overall wellbeing.
Burnout Recovery
It is crucial to recognise that rest and time off may not be enough and you may not “bounce back” from burnout.
It is more likely you will have to build an entirely new “normal” for yourself. That may mean relearning what makes you feel good and how to take care of yourself psychologically and physiologically. It will involve intentionally and uncomfortably seeking out social connection and belonging. You may need to grieve, forgive yourself and let go the person, professional and even career you thought you were.
My blend of behavioural change coaching, neuroscience and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is very well suited to supporting you through your recovery. Burnout recovery is a gradual process and my personalised 1:1 services will help you to reframe your experiences, recalibrate to your new “normal,” develop healthy coping mechanisms and strategies that will ultimately support you to create a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

I burnt out. Although , at the time, I didn’t have the words to articulate my experience. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. What I did know was that nothing had become more important to me than work, and nothing made me feel better than achieving at work.
